Clubhouse Broken Hill, a free after-school technology-learning hub for young people, has officially been launched.

The Clubhouse was established with funding from the  NSW Government’s ‘Our Region, Our Voice’ Regional Youth Investment Program’. It is also part of the  international Clubhouse Network, which began in Boston, Massachusetts. The not-for-profit organisation, Social Futures, manages the hub, and Clubhouses in Lismore, Ballina and Bathurst.

Social Futures CEO Tony Davies said the Clubhouse was ‘an engine room for our future digital leaders’. (The first Clubhouse was established in 1993 by two education researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – MIT is a top global university.)

“Clubhouse Broken Hill will support young people to use the latest tech tools to create and express themselves,” Mr Davies said.

“There are so many advantages for young people learning to do things like code games, edit movies and animate cartoons – they are being challenged to think, develop new concepts, find the technologies to realise new ideas, build their multi-media skills and ultimately believe in themselves, grow in confidence and appreciate they have so much to offer their community and the world.

“Social Futures is excited about strengthening our connections with Western NSW as we open up Clubhouse Broken Hill.”

The Clubhouse Network has 100 locations around the world and has made a difference to the lives of over 50,000 youth.

Clubhouse Broken Hill, at 285 Argent Street, will provide young people (aged 12 to 18 years) a safe and supported space to explore technologies with a youth worker.

The Clubhouse Network is a program of the Museum of Science, Boston in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab www.theclubhousenetwork.org
