Summary

What does social justice look like to you? At Social Futures, it means creating communities where everyone can belong, feel safe, and access the support they need. It is not a distant ideal. It is something shaped by the choices we make each day.

What is social justice?

Social justice is considered a fundamental human right and is a cornerstone of global, social, and economic development – United Nations

It can sound like a big idea. A policy term. Something debated in parliaments or discussed in global forums. But put simply, social justice is about fairness in action. It is about ensuring people are not excluded from opportunity, safety, or support because of circumstance.

Social justice in action

Social justice is not a distant concept or abstract idea; it lives in everyday moments and can be shaped by simple actions, like:

  • Listening without judgement,
  • Creating spaces where people feel safe and respected,
  • Speaking up when someone is excluded,
  • Noticing when someone may need support and helping them feel less alone,
  • Choosing compassion in everyday moments.

Each of us has a role to play. When we choose fairness, compassion, and inclusion in our daily lives, we contribute to social justice.

A commitment to social justice

At Social Futures, our commitment to social justice is reflected in the practical supports we provide across communities:

  • Delivering inclusive services that promote participation, independence, and choice for people with disability,
  • Providing housing and homelessness support to help individuals and families access safe and stable housing,
  • Facilitating community-based programs that strengthen wellbeing, connection, and resilience.

Through collaboration, advocacy, and person-centred services, we aim to reduce barriers and create pathways for people to thrive, especially those most vulnerable.

As cost of living and housing pressures rise across Australia, particularly in regional areas, our work is critical. We champion change by lobbying local, state and federal decision makers, presenting insights and solutions at national conferences, and engaging with media through interviews and releases. Through these efforts, our advocacy has reached over three million people, ensuring community challenges are heard and acted on.
