Summary

BCF hosts post referendum discussion

On Wednesday 18 October, 21 Better Chances Forum (BCF) members met online to debrief after the referendum, to understand what children and young people are experiencing and to discuss how we can work alongside them.

Members came into the discussion with a mix of feelings, we shared our experiences, discussed strategies and left feeling lighter with actions to take forward into our own work.

We acknowledged the impact of the referendum on interpersonal relationships, increased cultural load of our First Nations people and the mental health of our communities.

Strategies to consider in practice included; providing culturally safe spaces for big conversations with adults and young people, truth telling, listening more than ever, role modelling to young people how to learn, listen and go deep; empathy for ourselves and others in challenging times.

The consistent BCF monthly connection space provided members time to reflect on what has been a big week.
