Summary

This Close the Gap Day we are proud to launch our new Journey to Reconciliation film clip which highlights some of the incredible work, passion and commitment our staff have to closing the gap and creating a more reconciled Australia.

Twenty years ago, Australia committed to closing the gap in disadvantage for Aboriginal Australians by 2025. With just five years to reach this target, there is still much to do. Life expectancy for First Nations peoples remains 8 years below that of non-Aboriginal Australians. Australia has the unenviable record for the world’s highest incarceration rates for First Nations people. We have people living in third world conditions within a first world country. Progress has been made, but we must set higher goals and strive for better outcomes.

Social Futures is a social justice organisation. We believe strongly in equality and belonging for all. We want to see all people thriving and all communities strong and prospering. This is the Australia we want to live in and the one we work each day to help create. Every Australian has a role to play in this. Every action, every sentence, all of our intentions and beliefs contribute to this collective effort. As such, assuming responsibility for our own roles in the creation of the world we want to live in, is incredibly important.

Social Futures takes reconciliation seriously. We know this isn’t a destination but rather a journey we walk every day. This Close the Gap Day we are proud to launch our new Journey to Reconciliation film clip which highlights some of the incredible work, passion and commitment our staff have to closing the gap and creating a more reconciled Australia. The more of us who walk this path, the sooner that gap will close, and the richer we will all be for it.
