15 April is Youth Homelessness Matters Day.
Did you know…
It is estimated that 40% of Australia’s entire homeless population is aged 25 years or under.
So few?
29,114 young people needed long-term housing in 2024, but a mere 3.8% received it.
That many?
In 2024, 43,226 young Australians aged under 25 presented alone to a Special Homelessness Service, like Connecting Home, for homelessness support. Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health and over one third experienced domestic and family violence. The majority of these young people were in need of short- or long-term accommodation and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity.
The real reason?
Domestic and family violence, poverty and the housing crisis are the main causes of youth homelessness.

Send a message to the Treasurer for the 2026 Federal Budget
This Youth Homelessness Matters Day (and every day), we need every politician across Australia to be thinking about the 40,000 + children and young people who are alone with nowhere to live.
In the lead-up to the 2026 Federal budget, we support the proposal to introduce a Youth Housing Supplement to ensure children and young people are no longer locked out of social housing.
Please take a minute now to send a message to the Treasurer (and your local MPs) to support children and young people with nowhere to live.

Social Futures supports the HomeTime Campaign
Social Futures has joined more than 170 organisations in a national call to put children and young people first in housing and homelessness plans.
More than 40,000 Australian young people face homelessness every year. There aren’t enough homes, enough services, or enough funding dedicated to people under 25 years old.
The HomeTime Action Plan calls for:
- 15,000 youth tenancies for 16–24 year olds
- Linked support services to enable young people to pursue their goals for independence and opportunity
- Closing the rental gap so safe homes are viable for young tenants
No young person should be without a place to call home.

We can and must do better
In Australia, 1 in every 2 young people are turned away from crisis accommodation on any given night because they don’t have the funding to accommodate them.
We need to do better.

A Place to Call Home and the Support to Keep It
Everyone deserves a place to call home, and the support to keep it.
We are calling on the NSW Government to commit to lasting change by:
- Increasing the supply of social housing so that 1 in 10 homes are affordable homes
- Increasing baseline funding for Specialist Homelessness Services by 50%, so services can meet demand and deliver both preventative interventions and crisis support.
Add your voice today – together, we can make sure the government listens. With strong investment in homes and services, we can make homelessness in NSW rare, brief, and non-recurring.
