The Social Futures LAC Leadership team attended the 14th Annual National Disability Summit in Melbourne last week.

This is a key event on the calendar of disability service providers and industry leaders. There was discussion about the NDIS and wider issues and considerations for the disability sector in Australia. A key conference theme was: How can we better support people with disability and their families to maximise independence and participation by creating greater choice?

The audience was made up of NDIS services providers, community care organisations, support coordinators, people with disability, carers, state and federal government agencies, council organisations nationwide, NDIS representatives, aged care facilities, and aged care providers.

Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, the Hon Bill Shorten MP gave the keynote address and spoke about his commitment to improve the NDIS so it’s ‘world class’.

“It is here to stay and it will become more sustainable so that future generations can benefit from the scheme,” Mr Shorten told the audience.

Many people with lived experience of disability attended and spoke at the conference. Social Futures,  as a NDIS Partner in the Community in Northern NSW, Western, Far West and Central Coast of NSW, strongly values the contribution of its employees with lived experience of disability.

Other conference speakers included: Caroline Tjoa, Director – Include Ability Project, Australian Human Rights Commission and Dr Dinesh Palipana a doctor, lawyer, researcher, and disability advocate and 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year.
