Event Navigation

This free workshop is for staff of community service organisations who work directly with people impacted by disaster events.

The workshop will build organisational capacity to:

  • Rapidly respond to natural or built disasters through provision of personalised support for people directly affected by disaster;
  • Notice and support resilience in people affected by disaster;
  • Embed disaster response into their service action plans; and
  • Understand the broad principles of psychosocial support in a resilience framework

Community service organisations play an important role in supporting communities to recover from disasters and emergencies. And yet they are often not well prepared for disasters, making them less able to support those experiencing poverty and disadvantage, at a time when most needed.

Emerging from its experience in psychosocial recovery in the 2013 Blue Mountains bushfires, Gateway Family Services’ Anne Crestani says “It would have helped so much to have all of the information, ideas, models and evidence we needed in one place, in one program, to tap into whenever required. Most importantly, we needed something that was tailored to our sector, and linked to the experiences of other community based services.

Building on this experience, Gateway Family Services has developed WALK WITH – a relationship based model informed by a strengths approach to help community service organisations prepare for the impact of a disaster on a community, and on their service delivery.

The WALK WITH model will help Workshop participants to:

  • Strengthen the capacity of people affected by disaster to access and utilise resources and services that will support them as they begin to rebuild their future
  • Provide a model of individualised, relationship-based service that seeks to support and empower individuals, strengthening their capacity over time.
  • Promote service based on agreed goals with the client according to their preferences.
  • To promote working with clients to engage with services, seek financial assistance or information where they find it difficult to navigate the range of services, grants or loans available.

About the Trainers:

Anne Crestani:  Anne is the clinical Practice Manager for Gateway Family Services in the NSW Blue Mountains and organsiation with 25+ years of experience supporting disadvantaged families and individuals. Anne holds degrees in Social Science and Counselling and was the manager of the service which supported over 500 households impacted by the 2013 Blue Mountains bushfires. During (and after) the 2013 bushfires, Anne began to craft the Step by Step 4 Quadrant Model which the Walk With program is built around.

Joanna Brown: Joanna has worked in Community Development for over 20 years with experience across Local Government and the Community Sector. Joanna brings a commitment to community led disaster recovery and a strengths approach.

Registration:

This is a free workshop thanks to funding for the WALK WITH tool from the NSW Office of Emergency Management’s Community Resilience Innovation Program (CRIP). A focus of CRIP is capturing lessons learned about new ways of working, what works and what could be done differently, so that successful projects can be replicated in other communities. For this reason workshop participants must commit to completing a workshop evaluation form at the end of the training.
