Communicating Consciously in Conflict Situations is for people who would like to improve their ability to engage constructively in conversations that matter. The course is designed to provide practical skills that participants can apply within their own contexts. Participants will also be supported to ‘step-back’ and observe the effect dominant patterns of communication (such as giving advice, or wanting to be right) have in daily life, and to explore alternative forms of relating.

Participants will be introduced to principles of conflict transformation, facilitation, negotiation, dialogue, as well as Marshall Rosenberg’s Non-Violent Communication.

The course also aims to cultivate increased self-awareness of one’s own relationship to conflict through a series of contemplative practices. Particular focus will be placed on making intentional / conscious decisions in the face of difficult situations.

Workshop Topics:

  • Effective Communication; Introduction to 5 key communication skills.
  • Conflict Resolution; Reflecting on one’s relationship to conflict, introduction to Dual Concern model, Distributive vs. Integrative approach to negotiation.
  • Non-violent communication; Expressing feelings and needs, providing empathy (to self and others), De-escalating conflict.
  • Mindfulness; Reducing stress, maintaining uplifted emotional states, increased mental clarity/ composure.

Activities: The course is presented in an interactive format designed to make the content relevant to the participants’ goals/ interests. In addition to a traditional lecture format, the course includes:

  • participating in a dialogue circle
  • a re-framing exercise
  • small group discussion
  • role-play scenarios
  • a series of contemplative exercises

These exercises will help participants make connections between the course content and their own personal context and provide participants with an opportunity to practice / use these exercises after they complete the course.

Facilitator: David Burgener is a facilitator and educator, he has worked as a facilitator for the Peace & Conflict Studies Institute of Australia, as a lecturer at Australian Catholic University, and since 2011 as a practitioner of Marshall Rosenberg’s non-violent communication. David has contributed to the Canadian Centre for Teaching Peace, the Conversation Café initiative, and for many years as an elite youth sports coach. David has been a practitioner of meditation since 2000.

Feedback from past participants:

“The workshop, Communicating Consciously in Conflict Situations was fantastic! The facilitator David Burgener presented information in a clear and concise manner. He was very professional, calm and engaging. Small group activities encouraged reflection and discussion of ideas. The introduction of the concept of Mindfulness has opened my mind to a whole new way of thinking. If you get the chance to complete a course with David, don’t hesitate!” (Participant from 2016 Social Futures course).
